A Tribute to Eli Gold: The Golden Voice of Alabama Football

For over 35 years, Eli Gold has been the voice that Alabama fans have turned to for the exhilarating highs and heartbreaking lows of Crimson Tide football. As the iconic play-by-play announcer, Eli Gold has etched his name into the annals of college football history with his unforgettable calls and unwavering passion for the game.

One of the most memorable moments in Eli Gold's illustrious career came during Alabama's Rose Bowl Victory over Texas, when Nick Saban secured his first National Championship with the Crimson Tide. As the final seconds ticked away, Gold's voice rose above the roar of the crowd, capturing the essence of the historic moment and etching it into the memories of fans forever.

Another unforgettable call by Eli Gold came during the legendary "Gravedigger" touchdown against the Auburn Tigers on 4th and 31. In a moment of sheer disbelief and euphoria, Gold's voice echoed the emotions of every Alabama fan as they witnessed one of the most improbable plays in college football history.

Throughout the years, Eli Gold has become synonymous with Alabama football, so much so that many fans have chosen to listen to his radio broadcast while muting the TV commentary, especially when faced with listening to other broadcasters, especially the team of Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson. His voice has become a comforting companion for fans, guiding them through the highs and lows of each game with his signature enthusiasm and insight and the all so familiar “Touchdown Alabama”.

However, recent events have cast a shadow over Eli Gold's storied career. The decision by the University of Alabama to announce that Gold would not be returning as play-by-play announcer, framing it as retirement rather than non-renewal due to disagreement on terms, has sparked controversy and uproar among Crimson Tide faithful. Many fans have expressed outrage towards the University, Greg Byrne, and CTSN for the handling of the situation. Eli has chosen to speak to several media outlets making it known that he did not retire! He has chosen to not share any specifics, but did acknowledge that the two parties could not agree to terms, regarding an extension of his expiring contract (due to expire in June ’24.  I believe Eli’s mini-media tour has served as the main fuel for this current firestorm.

The University of Alabama has opted to remain mostly silent regarding the departure of long-time broadcaster Eli Gold. However, the University did release a couple of press releases shedding light on their perspective of the circumstances surrounding the decision to part ways with the celebrated broadcaster.

According to the statements released by the University, they had been in discussions with Eli Gold to find a way to honor and celebrate his hall of fame career. Despite offering several pathways that would have allowed Eli to continue as a contributor to the Crimson Tide Sports Network (CTSN) broadcast team, it was decided that the two sides would go their separate ways.

After numerous conversations over a period of time and several offers made to Eli, the University came to the conclusion that moving forward in a different direction, specifically with Chris Stewart taking over broadcasting duties, would serve the best interest of the University and CTSN.

Eli Gold had been an iconic voice for the University of Alabama's sports broadcasts for many years, earning the admiration and respect of fans across the nation. His departure marks the end of an era for Crimson Tide sports broadcasting and leaves fans and colleagues alike reflecting on his contributions and legacy.

As the University of Alabama and CTSN move forward with Chris Stewart at the helm, it will be interesting to see how the broadcast team evolves and adapts to the changes. While Eli Gold's absence will undoubtedly be felt, the University is confident that the decision to part ways was made in the best interest of the University of Alabama.

The legacy of Eli Gold will undoubtedly endure, and his impact on the University of Alabama's sports broadcasting will be remembered for years to come. As the University transitions to a new chapter in its broadcasting history, fans can look forward to experiencing Chris Stewart and the CTSN team bring Crimson Tide sports to life on the airwaves.

In the midst of conflicting narratives, it remains uncertain whether the full story will ever come to light. As the saying goes, there are always three sides to every story: Eli's version, the University's version, and the truth.

Despite the current turmoil, it is my hope that reconciliation can be achieved between the two parties, and that Eli Gold will receive a farewell befitting his legendary status. While I support the University's decision, I also encourage Alabama fans to embrace the transition and give Chris Stewart the opportunity to step into the role, much like they did for Eli Gold 35 years ago.

In the end, Eli Gold's legacy as the Golden Voice of Alabama Football will endure, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of fans and the history of Crimson Tide football. Here's to hoping that the final chapter of this saga will be written with grace, respect, and appreciation for all that Eli Gold has contributed to the Alabama football community.
